Thanks mom for digging out the Superman cape you made for me when I was 4 years old so that I could wear it again 26 years later to celebrate turning 30…nice stitch job…you think it’ll still fit when I’m 56?

(And Josh, next time, try not to poke yourself in the eye with your iPhone.)

Guess they really do always deliver…

Posted in Travel, Writing on July 26th, 2008 by Jeff Hutchens

This is how I know I’m on the road too much. I just received a personal phone call from the local postmaster telling me I was abusing the “mail hold” policy because my mail is held more days than it’s actually delivered. She didn’t think it was funny when I said, “Well, isn’t it easier for you to hold the mail rather than deliver it?”

Anyone feel like earning a few extra bucks picking up my mail? Apparently it’s a pretty steady job…

I like my bed…

Home. For two weeks and then back off again to China for another month, at least. It’s a busy schedule, but by the end of the next trip we’ll have finished shooting all six of the episodes of this first season.

For some reason the Chinese internet over the last couple of weeks hasn’t been allowing me access to this blog…so now that I’m home I can update it a bit. I’ll write more later, but in the mean time I’ll post some photos from the last couple of weeks.

Also– I’m pretty excited because a picture of mine won a second place in the World Press contest I wrote about a few weeks back!

Here’s the winning photo…

‘Tis the season…

Posted in Lost in China/Somewhere in China, Photography, Travel, Writing on December 31st, 2007 by Jeff Hutchens

…for photo contests. Every year from late December to the end of January, photojournalist the world over are huddled around their computer monitors, toning files, editing essays, and trying to make their captions sound more intelligent. It is Contest Season. The bane of our existence. Tedium.

Their are a few major contests that everyone enters, in order of prominence:

1) World Press Photo – This is the big daddy. Win something here and people notice. It’s sponsored by the Dutch government and every year they select a Photo of the Year in addition to judging images in several other categories. Aesthetically the most progressive, also the most political and most international.

2) Pictures of the Year International (POYi) – In it’s 65th year, POYi is run out of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and leans more towards magazine style shooting as opposed to newspaper style.

3) Best of Photojournalism (BOP) – Relatively recent contest sponsored by the National Press Photographers’ Association (NPPA) it leans more towards newspaper style and less towards magazine.

4) White House News Photographers’ Association (WHNPA) – A local Washington, D.C. contest, it’s fairly heavy on news coverage and politics, but a fun contest. They have open judging every year which is a blast to watch, until you hear your photos eliminated… I’m really bummed I’m gonna miss the judging this year because of our shoot in China – it’s always a good time since all the photographers in D.C. come out to watch.

So, I’m in the middle of trying to decide what to enter. You have a limited number of entries in each contest, so you have to pair things down a bit. I won’t repost some of my favorites from this most recent shoot in China, but here are some other images of mine from this year…

Cambodia, Khmer Rouge Trials

Thailand

Yellowstone

Tree hugging…

Now that I’m back from China my posts haven’t been as regular…but everything will gear up again when we head out for another shoot in mid-January. Looks like we’ll be hitting Harbin (far-north Manchuria) and Inner Mongolia for one episode, then trucking down to Yunnan (mid-south) for the second episode. The weather in Harbin is supposed to be a bit brisk…double digits below zero. Great weather for shooting…and frostbite…

Here’s a photo of me from the early 80′s when we used to live in Harbin…I think I’m confusing tree bark for parental jeans…

Anywho, I’ve done a few shoots in DC the last couple weeks, here’s one photo from a shoot last Tuesday that I kind of liked…
